Bring your own device (BYOD)—also called bring your own technology (BYOT), bring your own phone (BYOP), and bring your own personal computer (BYOPC)—refers to a policy of permitting employees to bring personally owned devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.) to work, and to use those devices to access privileged company information and applications [Wikipedia].
BYOD might sound progressive, but it’s a compliance and security disaster waiting to happen. Personal devices bypass corporate controls, open doors to unmanaged risks, and clash with any serious attempt at governance. Treating them like trusted endpoints is wishful thinking, not strategy.
